Auburn incorporated in 1892 soon after the railroad was extended to that point. Auburn is located in western Barrow County and is 42 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta and 27 miles west of Athens. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.5 square miles. As of 2010, Auburn had a population of 6,887.
